I just bought a perfect beauty of a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2wd 4.0 and after fooling with the alarm the Jeep would turn over well but not start. I continued to fool with the alarm trying to follow the directions of the seller and it cranked immediately but ran only about a hundred yards before dying again. The coil has been replaced and the great mechanic who has serviced the vehicle for the past ten years is pulling his hair out over his and others belief that the factory alarm is the root of all evil. It also has a fancy aftermarket alarm installed , which has a carjacking mode, but supposedly it or was d/c''d and now dormant. I have given him some directions for bypass from another web site that did no good, now he is straining over limited and possibly not always accurate schematics. Good schematics and some hx on repairs of thousands of similair complaints over the years might be a good offering to him. Bless his heart, he has hardly had time to run his business. Please hel

Hello

The first thing I would suggest is that unless you absolutely love the added after market alarm, is to have it totally removed from your Jeep, having two systems competing against each other in the same Jeep is just asking for continual head aches, after it has been removed concentrate on the factory system

It sounds as if your factory alarm is active and needs to be disarmed

The factory alarm can be disarmed by unlocking the drivers and/or passengers door with the key or by unlocking the car with the Factory remote (not the add on remote from the add on system), also unlocking the lift gate with the key should disable the system,if one door works and the other does not the disarm switch in the door that did not will need to be replaced if both doors and the lift gate do not disarm the alarm, the next step to disarm the alarm is to momentarily by pass the disarm switch, to do this remove the drivers door panel now look up into the door at the rear where the lock cylinder comes into the door you should see a switch clipped to the back of the cylinder follow the wires from this switch down to where they plug into the door harness unplug this connector, now with the keys out of the ignition jump the two terminals in the door harness side together for a split second, then try and start the car, if it runs the disarm switches will need to be replaced ,if not try the by pass on the other side,(the wire that you are by passing should accomplish this but the module is looking for a momentary contact, not a full time ground) if you lock the doors with the remote or electric switch after the bypass it will reset the alarm and you will have to bypass again, these disarm switches do go bad allot, if neither switch will by pass inspect the door to body jumper harness and inspect for brakes or melting if found the door jumper harness will need to be repaired, Also be sure to check all fuses in the fuse box and in the under hood power distribution center

On the early Grand Cherokees there where a few problems with the hood switch, you may want to have the updated striker and switch installed after the system is diagnosed and repaired, replace the hood switch and add a striker for the switch, if the striker is already mounted to the hood above the switch then this has most likely already been done

Donny,
Sorry for the delay, my mechanic tried what you suggested and and managed to get the vehicle to start more often than usual but it would die after a little while after just sitting in the shop. He talked to Chrysler US and they told him that these alarms just would go out at this age and would have to "I believe" be replaced; wiring and other components as disconnecting would be be a very time consuming and destructive process as far as other electronics working. He tested just about about every wire and harness to make sure they were not ties into the system, since he did not have much of a schematic and as of today believes he has succeded. He is still keeping it a couple of days to drive around and put through other tests to make sure the Factory Alarm as you and most others have said, does not decide   to show its ugly head again. I'm not sure if he left the aftermarket alarm, it had supposedly been disconnected anyway. But like you said, the key fob that I was using was not the factory original, as I looked up the FCC #, close but not exact and it was about worn out and there was no backup. I plan to order my own from the Auto Audio place or Auto Zone once I see what keyless components are still affected by remote. Your payment has already come out of my checking acct. but I was hoping to keep the line of communication with you open just in case, God forbid, there are any other complications.

Thanks for your help and I will finalize my acceptance just as soon as I get word from my mechanic. You were the first one with some detailed advise althought Chryler says the problems with the hood and the alarm did not exist after the 1993 models.
